Sick or not, I run for the Heart Association

Well first of all, I was glad to be doing anything on this Friday since I felt as though I had just died on Wednesday! I had the worst stomach bug ever and wouldn't dream of wishing it on anyone! I decided I was going to participate in the Running in Red run on campus to support the American Heart Association. It was a 5K (3.1 miles) and I knew it would be tough, but I could do it. You can view my route here. I was very proud of myself for running the whole thing and doing it in 31:06. Not too shabby for having not run much and being sick! I am trying to get myself motivated and up to the challenge of my Triathlon that I will be in on October 13th, as well as the Spartan run I will be participating in on November 10th! THEN, I have gone and signed myself up for the Hollywood Half Marathon in April! I'm not sure what has overcome me, but I guess I have more faith in myself than I thought! Here is to the next workout...until then...

Run those hills

Sunday morning was a great time to get up and run, run, run! I woke up early, drank some coffee, got ready, and went for a rolling hill run through the neighborhood. I am using a new app now, Nike+, and it is great! I love the achievements you can receive and how motivating it is! My run can be viewed here. I have been having issues lately with my left leg hurting...I think it is a slight nerve issue and I hope it goes away quick! I wanted to run more...but I need to run a few flat and fast courses before jumping back into the neighborhood so that I can build up my endurance.

I ran 2.02 miles in 20:36 and averaged 5.89 miles per hour and had a pace of 10:12 per mile. However, my first mile I ran in 9:52...so my goal is to stick with that pace and eventually beat it! I also set a goal to do 12 workouts in the month of September. I will challenge myself further by increasing this for the month of October and so on. My next event run will be next Friday, September 21st in the Red Dress Run on campus, it is a 5K so hopefully I will be prepared for the 3.1 mile run! The Triathlon also includes a 3.1 mile run. So, here's to the next workout! Until then...

Nice day for a swim

Another day, another swim! I decided to go just a little bit farther at a time today. I swam 700 yards total in 13:01, which averages 1:51 per 100 yards and puts me right where I need to be to finish my swim portion on target for the Tri.

Here is my workout:
2x50 swim sprints (0:45 and 0:47)
1x100 swim sprint (1:46)
1x200 swim sprint (3:53)
1x150 swim sprint (2:58)
1x100 swim sprint
1x50 swim sprint [cool down]

I don't remember the other times because I added them up right when I got done and only seemed to remember the long swims and the total time! My goal next time I swim is to do 2x200 and 2x150 along with warm ups and cool downs.  My goal is to be able to swim the whole 600 (12 laps) by the first week of October. If I can do it at least once, then I can do it at the race! Here's to the next workout...until then!

To bike or not to bike...

I went out on Saturday morning eager and ready to ride no less than 16 miles! Little did I know, or pay attention to, that in order to adequately ride a long distance (or at all) you must first assess you bike...as in fill up the tires with air!!! I was so mad when I got on my bike and learned that the tires were less than adequate for not just a long ride, but a ride at all :(. I felt so dumb for not checking my tires. The bike had been just sitting in my house since June when I did the 37 mile ride, but tires need love too! I got about 4 miles out and decided that I needed to come on back, so I only did 8 miles in 34:30, which equates to 13.91 miles per hour. This is not a very good time, but I was not about to kill my rims by going too fast. I peaked at 18.5 miles an hour, but I didn't maintain it because I didn't want to have to pay to repair anything!

While this was not my best ride, it was a workout and I tried to look at the bright side of things...I got up and worked out! And, that is more than some can say :) Here's to the next workout, until then...

Swimming, swimming, and more swimming

I realize I need to get back to posting my progress as it occurs! I have been so busy with school, work, and my little one that I just plain ole' forget to post my progress (even if it is not quite where I want to be). I have been focusing on my Triathlon training lately so there will be more posts on swimming, biking, and running than Body Rock...but I will still throw a workout in there when I can because they are great cross training workouts!

So, what have I been up to...well I swam 600 yards on Tuesday, September 4th. This was my first swim since June! I guess I felt so comfortable with how well I did last year I felt I didn't need to train! So, not true...and here I am cramming in the workouts in the last month before the race! Sheesh!

Here is my workout:
2x50 swim sprints (0:45 and 0:47)
4x100 swim sprints (1:45, 1:48, 1:49, and 1:41)
2x50 swim sprints [cool down] (0:53 and 0:51)

I did this total workout in about 25 minutes, but the swimming portion adds up to 10:24. I am building up to swimming 600 yards straight since the swim portion is 587 yards, or 1/3 of a mile. I have more workouts to come! Here is to the next workout...until then!

Out of touch, but working out

Wow...I have not been very accountable in the last 2 months. I have had 8 softball games, ran 4 times, did a Corporate Sports Challenge, and gone canoeing since I last wrote. I am not very happy with my progress, or lack there of over the last 8 weeks...but here is what I did accomplish in that time:

The 8 softball games were every Tuesday and Thursday for about 4 weeks (through July and the first week into August).

I ran 1.5 miles on July 25th in 16:28. I had been sick for about 2 weeks...but I was still slow on this run. We were on vacation in Ft. Myers, FL...here is my route.

I ran 2 miles on August 11th in 20:40. Not my best, but better than the last run. This was a basic neighborhood run.

I ran 2.01 miles on August 24th in 20:11. Getting better! This was a double neighborhood run.

On August 25th, our department did the United Way Corporate Sports Challenge and we took home the gold! We had to compete in volleyball, basketball shootout, team long jump, tug-of-war, team relay race, and egg toss. We had by far the most points and won first place!

I ran 1.55 miles today, September 1st in 18:49. I seem to be having a problem in the back of my left leg with shooting pain as I run...but I also think the GPS was off by 0.1 miles. I actually ran 1.65 miles in 18:49. Still slow, but better than being 3:49 off of my target pace. I set a goal with map my run to do 12 workouts in the month of September. To go along with that I am going to challenge myself to record each of those workouts here like I used to do. Here is to the next workout and the hope that it pushes me to the next one! Until then...
